Reachin Display

For co-located graphics and haptics

The natural computer interface realized through Reachin Display makes the user feel, see and interact with objects just like in the real world. Reachin Display integrates a PHANTOM™ force feedback device from SensAble Technologies with stereo monitor and supporting systems.
The innovative use of a semi-transparent mirror creates an interface where graphics and haptics are co-located - the user can see and feel the object in the same place!

Developer Display
This robust system incorporates either the Phantom Premium 1.5 or 1.0 haptic device which provides a larger workspace and allows for higher exertable forces. It’s standard tool is a stylus or thimble, with the option to integrate a customised end effector. This is the system of choice for advanced applications such as:
Medical simulation and training, Virtual dentistry, Assembly training and evaluation, Digital mock-ups, Human-Computer Interfaces, Advanced Research and Development, etc...

Desktop Display
This configuration combines the Phantom Desktop haptic device with the innovative display system from Reachin. The result is a cost effective solution with a generous workspace. The high precision and haptic performance makes it suitable for applications such as:
Industrial Design, 3D sketching, Data mining, Scientific visualisation, Digital content creation, Education and training, etc...

The all new v3 Reachin Display can be configured as either a Desktop or Developer Display.

Benefits
  • Cost effective solution for high-end desktop VR
  • Highly realistic simulations with force-feedback and stereo viewing

  • Co-location of 3D view and haptic response
  • Minimal space requirements - fits on the desktop
  • Robust aluminium frame
  • Turn-key system combining market leading components in an innovative solution

  • What is Reachin Display?

It is quite hard to imagine what Reachin Display is like, before you have had a chance to test it yourself. The following quote is from The Sheerin Report Issue 1, which Peter K. Sheerin, Senior Technical Editor at CADENCE, wrote after testing Reachin Display at SIGGRAPH 2001.

"The one display device that absolutely astounded me was the Reachin Display from Swedish company Reachin AB (http://www.reachin.se). At first sight, this contraption looks as if it might belong on the desk of a mad scientist, but having used all of its components separately, I immediately realized its significance. Take a CRT monitor capable of stereo refresh rates, add StereoGraphics shutter glasses, a SensAble Phantom Desktop force-feedback controller, and a LogiCad3D Magellan/SpaceMouse. But mount the monitor so that it sits at a 45-degree angle, projecting its image onto a mirror placed above the Phantom. And to this add software that makes sure the tools you're using to interact with the 3D stereoscopic image are mapped into the very space occupied by the tip of the Phantom, so that your hand appears to be working on a real 3D model floating in front of you. This is the most immersive, compelling 3D modeling experience I have ever had, bar none."

It's hard to understand our touch-enabled solutions without trying them hands on. This short animation (3Mb) shows the Reachin concept.
