Stereoscopy

Stereoscopy or 3-D (three-dimensional) imaging is a technical approach to create the illusion of depth. This can be achieved by projecting two slightly different 2D images to each eye. These two different images are representing two perspectives that both eyes naturally receive in a binocular vision.

Transfering stereoscopic signals to HMD:

To use a stereoscopic HMD there are two principle methods to transmit the video information to the displays:

  • Passive mode (both information for left and right eye parallel
  • Active mode (to reduce cables and bandwith)
Trivisio: Stereoscopy
Stereoscopy Options:
dual channel Disadvantage:Two cables
field sequential verical Disadvantage:1/2 vert.resolution
field sequential horizontal Disadvantage:1/2 hor.resolution
field sequential horizontal double hor. resolution Best solution
frame sequential Disadvantage:Half frequency
